“This was just for you. I wanted to spoil you for the night.” He plants another searing kiss on my lips before snuggling in next to me.

“A girl could get used to this,” I sigh when we’re cozied up under the covers.

“That’s exactly what I’m hoping for,” he says, as he places another sift kiss, this time on my forehead.

Chapter Fourteen

Ally and I are in the process of packing our bags for our train ride back to Bellecoaste this afternoon. I wish that we had more time to enjoy just being together, but I know that I can’t keep ignoring my duties at home. I’m already in pretty hot water for not telling anyone where we were headed, or that we were even leaving for that matter.

I’m not the reckless brother—that’s usually Andreas’ role—so I’m sure my parents are thinking I’ve gone completely mad. Acting out of character is just not something that I usually do. I respect my parents and the rules of my position. But lately those rules just seem oppressive and constricting.

I want to be king, there is no question about that, but I also want to focus more on the benefit of my people rather than fueling personal goals of the crown. I know that sounds kind of contradictory, since marrying Isabella would bring more economic stability to our country, but it would also make me miserable. Do the people of Bellecoaste really want a miserable king for the next forty years? Can I really do my best for them if I’m not happy at home?

Being a monarch is stressful enough; I want someone who I can come home to at the end of the day and relax and be myself around. I want someone who is supportive, a solid partner who can help to guide me times are tough. And if this person’s name happens to be Allison Kenny, then my life will be complete.

“I’m going to take a shower real quick,” Ally says, derailing my train of thought.

I nod. “I’m just going to finish this. Take your time. We’ve still got a couple of hours yet.”

She grabs a handful of things and takes them to the bathroom with her, shutting the door softly.

I’m watching the traffic from the window when my phone starts to ring. I glance at the screen and see my father’s private number on the screen before swiping to answer.

“Hello,” I sigh.

“How nice of you to finally answer your phone,” he says dryly.

I roll my eyes, thinking how brave I am with my little acts of defiance when he’s not in the room to see it.

“Have you been enjoying yourself in Paris?” he asks.

“We have actually,” I say, making sure to remind him I’m not here alone.

“I’m sure it has been just lovely. If you wouldn’t mind, I’d like to know when exactly you’re planning to end this little tryst and return home to plan your wedding?”

Leave it to him to get directly to the point.

“Who said I was doing either one?” I ask.
